In the waiting room, nobody asks whether keratin works. They have seen it work. On a sister before her wedding. On the colleague who walked into an August meeting with hair that had not negotiated with the humidity. She did not mention it. She did not need to.
The questions that do get asked are quieter. How much of my curl will I lose? And what happens after?
Both are fair questions. Both come from somewhere real.
Many of the women in that room spent years getting back to their own texture. The big chop, the transition, the patience of watching hair return to what it was before anyone put a relaxer near it.
To them, anything that straightens sounds like a step backwards. They have heard “texture-friendly” before. Some have a friend whose curls did not come back.
That caution is earned. We would not argue anyone out of it. We would only separate keratin from the thing it is often mistaken for.
Revitalise Keratin softens and smooths hair. The treatment is sealed with heat and the result is hair that is softer, shinier and quicker to manage. It is not a relaxer. It does not decide your texture for you.
How much of your curl stays is your decision. Some women want a looser version of their own texture: the same hair, with less shrinkage and less time spent coaxing it into shape. Some want sleek. This is settled with your hair therapist before anything is applied, in plain terms, looking at your hair together.
The other fear is heat. Anyone who has watched a silk press end in hair that never quite curled again has reason to be wary of anything sealed with an iron.
Heat is part of this process, so the hair has to be able to take it. Before anything is decided, your hair therapist reads what your hair has been through: colour, relaxer, extensions, heat and the handling of the last few months. If it needs something first, we tell you. If it needs to wait, we tell you that too. A result that holds is worth more than a result this afternoon.
Done Once And Forgotten
The first result can look so complete that keratin is easily taken for a relaxer without the relaxer, or for something done once and forgotten. The hair is smooth. Mornings are shorter.
There is no obvious reason to come back.
This is where it goes wrong.
The Line
Keratin treats the hair that is there on the day. What grows afterwards arrives in its own texture. Over time each strand carries two: smoothed length below, new growth at the root. The two behave differently. The length lies flat while the new growth coils and pulls against it. Combing, styling and heat all meet at that point. Left too long, that is where breakage starts.
It rarely announces itself. The hair still looks smooth from the front. The roots are easy to style around, easy to press, easy to leave until next month because next month is when there will be time. Then the comb catches in the same place every morning. Short pieces start appearing in the sink.
A touch-up brings the new growth into line with the length so the strand behaves as one again. Its timing is read, not scheduled. It depends on how fast your hair grows, how you wear it and how the length has held. Your hair therapist looks at the line and the lengths together and tells you when.
One of our recent Client Files shows it plainly. The concern was grown out roots. The risk was breakage at the line. What we found was two textures. The treatment was a Revitalise Keratin touch-up. The result was smooth hair from root to tip.
Between Visits
For most of us, dry hair has always meant oil. It arrived through the hands of women who loved us, on Sunday evenings before school, and there is real tenderness in it.
On smoothed hair, heavy oil works against you. It sits on the strand and weighs it down. The softness you came in for starts to feel flat. What keratin-treated hair wants is water-based moisture, often.
In the salon, Moisture S.O.S or Moisture Mend keeps it soft and smooth between touch-ups. Which one and when is read on the day.
The Treatment Room
Keratin is chosen by women who value their time. Less of it spent detangling. Less of it spent on frizz. Less of it spent negotiating with their hair before a long day. The first treatment starts that. The touch-up and the care between visits keep it.
When you come in, your hair therapist reads your hair before anything touches it. If you are new to keratin, you will know how much curl you are keeping and whether your hair is ready. If you already have it, the line is read and we tell you whether it is time.
